The Mercedes-Benz GLC Electric went on sale in India on November 4, 2026, at an introductory ex-showroom price of Rs 78.5 lakh, and it arrives with a problem most launches would love to have. Mercedes says it has more than 1,000 bookings already, and its order book is full until March 2027.
The SUV is assembled at the company’s Chakan plant near Pune and comes in one version, the GLC 400 4Matic. Autocar India, Autocar Professional, HT Auto, CarWale and Cartoq all carried the launch within hours, which made it the biggest Indian car story of the day.
Here is what you get, how it compares with the petrol GLC, and what that waiting list really means for anyone thinking of booking now.
What is the Mercedes-Benz GLC Electric?
The Mercedes-Benz GLC Electric is a mid-size luxury electric SUV built on a dedicated EV platform, not a converted petrol GLC. The India model is the GLC 400 4Matic, with two motors, all-wheel drive and a 94kWh battery. It is locally assembled in Pune and is now the entry point to Mercedes’ electric SUV range in India.
HT Auto reports it is the fastest global Mercedes model to reach India, arriving less than six months after its global launch. We first covered the global car in our Mercedes-Benz GLC EV preview, when Mercedes quoted a range of up to 715 km. The India launch figure is slightly lower, as the table below shows.
Mercedes-Benz GLC Electric specifications
| Specification | GLC 400 4Matic (India) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Price (introductory, ex-showroom) | Rs 78.5 lakh | Mercedes-Benz India |
| Battery | 94kWh | Autocar India |
| Architecture | 400V | Autocar India |
| Motors and drive | 2 motors, all-wheel drive | Autocar India |
| Power and torque | 490hp (482.4bhp) and 800Nm | Autocar India, CarWale |
| 0-100kph | 4.3 seconds | Autocar India |
| Gearbox | 2-speed | Autocar India |
| Range | 711 km (WLTP) | Autocar India |
| DC charging | Up to 330kW; about 300 km in 10 minutes | Autocar India, Cartoq |
| AC charger | 22kW, standard | Autocar India |
| Length / wheelbase | 4,856 mm / 2,972 mm | Cartoq |
| Boot | 570 litres plus 128-litre front trunk | Cartoq |
Two numbers need context. The 711 km figure is a WLTP lab claim, so real highway range with four people and the air-conditioning running will be lower. And the 300 km in 10 minutes needs a 330kW charger, which very few Indian public stations offer today. Cartoq makes the same point, noting a typical public charger will take longer.
The 2-speed gearbox is unusual for an EV. Autocar India says one ratio is for acceleration and the other for efficiency.
How does the GLC Electric compare with the petrol and diesel GLC?
The electric GLC is bigger, quicker and only slightly dearer than the combustion GLC. Cartoq says the petrol and diesel versions cost about Rs 77 lakh ex-showroom, so the EV is roughly Rs 1.5 lakh more before taxes. Its wheelbase is 84 mm longer, and it adds a 128-litre front trunk for cables or small bags.
CarDekho’s headline claims the EV works out nearly Rs 8.95 lakh cheaper than the combustion GLC on the road, which would come from lower registration and road tax on electric cars in many states. We have not verified that number city by city, so treat it as an estimate and ask your dealer for a written on-road quote.
There are trade-offs. Autocar India says the India-spec car skips rear-wheel steering and air suspension, riding on passive dampers. The GLC Electric also weighs around 2.5 tonnes, according to Cartoq.
What features does the GLC Electric get in India?
The headline feature is a 39.1-inch MBUX Hyperscreen spanning the whole dashboard, which Autocar India calls the largest single-piece screen in any vehicle in India. Other equipment includes a 15-speaker Burmester 3D audio system with Dolby Atmos, a panoramic roof with adjustable tint, nine airbags and Level 2 driver assistance.
Outside, AMG Line styling is standard, with 20-inch alloy wheels. The illuminated grille has 914 pixel lighting elements, according to Autocar India. Cartoq lists six paint colours, including Sheer Blue and Lavender Silver, plus a 360-degree camera, powered front seats and dual wireless chargers.
One downside of the big screen: Cartoq notes that many controls, including climate settings, now live inside the display rather than on physical buttons. That is worth testing on a drive before you sign.
Why does the GLC EV have a waiting period until March 2027?
Demand outran supply. Mercedes-Benz India MD and CEO Santosh Iyer told Autocar Professional the company has “1,000-plus bookings” and the car is sold out through March 2027. Bookings opened in October. Mercedes is asking its global leadership for more assembly kits to build more cars at Chakan and shorten the wait.
“More cars, more kits, so that we can produce more here,” Iyer said, according to Autocar Professional. The publication also put the bookings’ indicative retail value at over Rs 785 crore, while noting that this is not revenue the company has booked.
For context, India’s electric car market is growing fast, as our report on October 2026 electric car sales showed. A thousand orders for an Rs 80 lakh EV is still a big number for the luxury segment.

CarBike Insight Analysis
The GLC Electric is priced almost on top of the petrol GLC, and that is the real story. For years the luxury EV pitch in India came with a big premium. Here, Mercedes is asking only about Rs 1.5 lakh more, according to Cartoq, for a bigger, quicker car with lower running costs. Local assembly is what makes that possible.
The sell-out is a strong signal, but buyers should be careful. “Introductory” usually means the price can rise for later orders, and Mercedes has not said when. If you book now, get the price locked in writing. Also be honest about charging: the 711 km and 330kW figures are best-case. If you mostly charge at home on the 22kW AC unit, the car makes sense. If you rely on highway fast chargers, test your usual routes first.
The bigger contest is coming. CarWale expects the BMW iX3 in 2027, likely assembled locally too. BMW already sells long-range electric luxury cars here, such as the one in our BMW i5 LWB ownership guide, but the GLC Electric now has a head start in a segment that barely existed a year ago.
FAQ
What is the price of the Mercedes-Benz GLC Electric in India?
The GLC 400 4Matic Electric costs Rs 78.5 lakh ex-showroom, an introductory price announced on November 4, 2026. Mercedes has not said how long that price will last, so buyers should confirm the final on-road quote in writing with their dealer.
What is the range of the GLC Electric?
Mercedes claims a WLTP-certified range of 711 km from the 94kWh battery. That is a laboratory figure, so real-world range on Indian highways, with passengers and air-conditioning, will be lower. Earlier global material quoted up to 715 km.
How long is the GLC EV waiting period?
Mercedes-Benz India says the SUV is sold out until March 2027 after more than 1,000 bookings. The company is seeking extra assembly kits to increase production at Chakan, which could shorten waiting times later, but no new dates have been given.
Is the Mercedes-Benz GLC Electric made in India?
Yes, it is locally assembled at the Mercedes-Benz plant at Chakan near Pune. HT Auto reports that it reached India less than six months after its global launch, making it the fastest global Mercedes model to arrive here.
What are the GLC Electric’s main rivals?
It has few direct rivals right now in India. CarWale expects the BMW iX3 to be its biggest competitor when it arrives in 2027, likely with local assembly. Until then, buyers may compare it with other luxury electric SUVs and the petrol GLC.
