Mahindra Thar Electric: What We Know About the Upcoming EV, Range and Launch

The Mahindra Thar Electric is shaping up to be one of the most interesting upcoming electric SUVs from India’s largest homegrown SUV manufacturer. First shown publicly as the Vision Thar.e concept in 2023, the electric Thar is planned as a very different vehicle from the petrol and diesel Thar currently sold in India.

Mahindra has not yet announced the production version’s final specifications, price or customer launch date. Current industry reporting points toward a 2027 launch, although earlier expectations had placed the electric Thar closer to 2026. Autocar India’s current model information lists 2027 as the expected launch year.

That makes it important to separate what Mahindra has actually revealed from estimates based on the company’s EV platform and the thare concept.

What Is the Mahindra Thar Electric?

The electric Thar began life as the Vision Thar.e, unveiled by Mahindra in August 2023.

Unlike the conventional Thar, the electric version is being developed as a born-electric SUV rather than simply converting the existing ladder-frame platform to electric power.

Mahindra said the Vision Thar.e would use its INGLO electric platform and a high-performance all-wheel-drive electric powertrain. The concept was designed to retain the adventurous character associated with the Thar while moving the model into an electric future.

This is an important distinction.

The current Thar is based around a traditional SUV architecture with an internal-combustion engine and mechanical four-wheel-drive system. The electric Thar is expected to use a flat-floor EV architecture with the battery integrated into the skateboard-style platform.

That means the production vehicle could be substantially different underneath, even if it carries familiar Thar design cues.

Mahindra Thar Electric Launch Date

Mahindra has not officially confirmed a production launch date for the Thar Electric.

Current automotive industry information points toward 2027, with Autocar India’s latest model listing showing 2027 as the expected launch year.

Earlier reports had suggested that the Thar.e could arrive during 2026, but Mahindra’s product rollout has evolved since the concept was first shown.

The company has been expanding its electric range with models such as the BE 6, XEV 9e and XEV 9S, while also adding electric powertrains to existing SUV nameplates.

As a result, buyers should treat any specific Thar Electric launch month currently circulating online as unconfirmed unless Mahindra announces it.

Thar Electric Will Use Mahindra’s INGLO Platform

The most important technical development is the platform.

The Mahindra Thar Electric is expected to use a version of the INGLO electric architecture, rather than the ladder-frame chassis used by the conventional Thar. Autocar India has previously reported that the Thar.e would use a modified version called the P1.

The INGLO platform was developed specifically around electric powertrains.

It allows Mahindra to package a large battery between the axles, lowering the vehicle’s centre of gravity compared with a conventional high-floor SUV.

For the Thar, however, Mahindra will need to balance this EV packaging with sufficient ground clearance and underbody protection.

That is particularly important because the Thar name carries genuine off-road expectations.

Will the Mahindra Thar Electric Have Four-Wheel Drive?

The concept was shown with a high-performance AWD electric powertrain, and current industry information continues to point toward a dual-motor, four-wheel-drive configuration. Autocar India’s current Thar.e listing describes the model as a two-motor, four-wheel-drive SUV.

A dual-motor setup would place one electric motor at each axle.

This has an advantage beyond outright performance. Electric motors can deliver torque extremely quickly, allowing software to control power distribution between the front and rear axles.

For an off-road-focused vehicle, that could provide very precise traction management.

However, the final production system, motor outputs and off-road drive modes have not yet been confirmed by Mahindra.

Expected Mahindra Thar Electric Range

The Thar Electric’s final battery capacity and certified range remain unconfirmed.

Earlier technical reporting suggested that the vehicle could use battery packs in the 60kWh to 80kWh range, with the larger battery potentially offering around 435-450km of WLTP range on the broader INGLO architecture.

Those figures should not be treated as the official range of the production Thar Electric.

The actual number will depend on the final battery, motor configuration, vehicle weight, tyres, aerodynamics and software calibration.

An electric off-road SUV also faces a unique efficiency challenge. Large tyres, high ground clearance and an upright body can increase energy consumption compared with a lower crossover.

For that reason, a certified range above 400km would be useful, but the final figure is more important than early estimates.

Design Could Be the Biggest Talking Point

The Vision Thar.e concept looked very different from the current Thar.

Mahindra’s concept featured an upright, boxy silhouette, squared-off wheel arches, a high stance and distinctive geometric lighting.

The design was clearly intended to communicate ruggedness without simply copying the existing Thar.

The production vehicle will almost certainly be toned down compared with the concept. However, the core proportions could remain recognisable.

This is important for Mahindra because the Thar has developed a strong visual identity in India.

The company therefore needs to make the electric version futuristic enough to look like a new EV while retaining enough Thar character for customers to immediately understand what it represents.

A Different Interior Approach

The Vision Thar.e concept also previewed a futuristic cabin with a minimalist dashboard and large digital displays.

A production model would be expected to use a more practical interpretation of that design.

Mahindra’s newer electric SUVs already demonstrate the company’s direction with large screens, connected technology, premium materials and software-focused features.

The Thar Electric could therefore receive a modern digital cockpit, connected vehicle functions, multiple drive modes and advanced driver-assistance technology.

However, the final equipment list has not been announced.

It is also too early to claim specific features such as a particular screen size, ADAS level or audio system as confirmed.

How Different Will It Be From the Current Thar?

The differences could be substantial.

The electric Thar should therefore not be viewed simply as a battery-powered replacement for today’s model.

It is expected to become a separate interpretation of the Thar idea.

Expected Price of Mahindra Thar Electric

Mahindra has not announced pricing.

Current estimates vary. CarDekho currently lists an estimated price of around ₹25 lakh, while Autocar India’s current model information indicates an expected on-road Delhi price of around ₹23.44 lakh. Neither figure is an official Mahindra price.

The eventual price will depend heavily on battery capacity, motor specification, equipment and Mahindra’s positioning strategy.

The electric Thar is unlikely to compete directly with the entry-level petrol and diesel Thar on price.

Instead, it could sit much closer to premium electric SUVs.

That would make the vehicle a substantially more expensive proposition than the current Thar, but its electric architecture and technology would also be fundamentally different.

Why the Thar Electric Matters

The Thar Electric is important for another reason.

Mahindra has said that it intends to gradually electrify its existing internal-combustion SUV brands. The company has previously indicated that the Thar, Scorpio and Bolero will also move into the EV space.

The Thar therefore has the potential to become an important technology showcase.

If Mahindra can deliver a genuinely capable electric off-roader, it could demonstrate that EV technology does not have to be limited to urban crossovers.

The challenge will be battery weight, charging infrastructure and energy consumption during demanding off-road use.

CarBike Insight Analysis

The Mahindra Thar Electric could be more important than its sales numbers suggest.

The conventional Thar has built its reputation around mechanical simplicity, four-wheel-drive capability and an unmistakable design. An electric version has to reinterpret all three.

Electric motors could actually provide an advantage in off-road conditions because torque delivery can be controlled extremely precisely.

The bigger challenge is energy management.

A difficult trail can consume significantly more energy than normal road driving. If the Thar Electric is expected to appeal to serious adventure users, Mahindra will need to ensure that its battery, thermal management and charging system can handle that use without making the vehicle excessively heavy.

The other major question is pricing.

A ₹20-25 lakh-plus electric Thar would move the nameplate into a completely different part of the market. Buyers would be paying not just for the Thar identity, but for a new electric platform, dual-motor drivetrain and modern technology.

That makes the final specifications particularly important.

The Bottom Line

The Mahindra Thar Electric is expected to arrive as a born-electric interpretation of Mahindra’s iconic lifestyle SUV rather than a simple electric conversion of the existing Thar.

The Vision Thar.e concept confirmed the company’s intention to combine Thar-inspired ruggedness with an INGLO-based electric platform and high-performance AWD technology.

Current reporting points toward a 2027 launch, while battery capacity, range, power, production design and final pricing remain unconfirmed.

If Mahindra can combine genuine off-road capability with competitive electric range and fast charging, the Thar Electric could become one of India’s most distinctive electric SUVs.

For now, the most important thing to remember is that the production version has not yet been fully revealed. Reported prices, range figures and specifications should therefore be treated as expectations until Mahindra publishes the final details.
