The Range Rover Electric India launch is now part of a bigger plan. JLR India managing director Rajan Amba said on October 20 that the company will launch four electric models in India starting early next year, and bring the Jaguar brand back in the second half of 2027.
He spoke at the opening of JLR’s new flagship showroom in Mumbai, as reported by Autocar Professional. The four models are the Range Rover Electric, the Range Rover Sport Electric, an all-electric Range Rover GT and the Jaguar Type 01.
There is one catch that buyers should understand early. Amba said the India-UK trade deal will not bring price relief on electric models for about five years. Here is what is confirmed, what it might cost, and who should consider it.
Range Rover Electric India launch: what is JLR planning?
| Model | Type | India status |
|---|---|---|
| Range Rover Electric | Flagship electric SUV | Bookings open since September 2026 |
| Range Rover Sport Electric | Sportier electric SUV | Part of the four-EV plan |
| Range Rover GT | All-electric grand tourer | Part of the four-EV plan |
| Jaguar Type 01 | Electric GT, Jaguar’s relaunch model | Jaguar returns in H2 2027 |
JLR has not given a separate launch date for each model. What Amba has said is that the EV rollout starts early next year, and that Jaguar returns as an all-electric brand in the second half of 2027.
He also said he sees no roadblocks to the plan. JLR intends to offer mild-hybrid, full-hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric versions across future Range Rover, Defender and Discovery models.
What do we know about the Range Rover Electric?
The Range Rover Electric is the furthest along. JLR opened Indian bookings on September 2 for a token amount of ₹10 lakh, Autocar India reported. Bookings cover the standard-wheelbase Autobiography and First Edition, and the long-wheelbase SV, SV Ultra and SV Black.
| Specification | Range Rover Electric (JLR claims) |
|---|---|
| Battery | 118.5kWh |
| Motors | Two, up to 550hp and 850Nm combined |
| 0-100kph | 4.5 sec |
| Range | Up to 600km WLTP; 535km real-world claim |
| DC charging | 10-80% in 22 min on a 350kW charger |
| Quick top-up | About 220km in 10 minutes |
| Wading depth | 900mm |
| Platform | MLA-Flex, shared with ICE and PHEV Range Rovers |
| Screens | 13.7-inch driver display, 13.1-inch touchscreen |
| Built at | Solihull, UK (fully imported to India) |
The design hardly changes from the petrol and diesel versions. There is no “Electric” badge on the body, just an aero-focused grille and wheels. JLR’s production manager even said prototypes did not need camouflage. Inside, the EV adds an AI-based range predictor and a battery-health “digital twin” as standard.
What will the Range Rover Electric cost in India?
JLR has not announced prices. Autocar India expects a starting price of around ₹3.5 crore ex-showroom. Treat that as an informed estimate until JLR confirms.
The bigger point is tax. The India-UK trade agreement, in force since July 15, cuts import duties on eligible British-built petrol and diesel cars from as high as 110 percent. But it gives electric, hybrid and hydrogen vehicles no concession for the first five years.
“From a pricing perspective, we don’t expect the benefit to flow for another 5 years,” Amba said. So eligible British-built petrol and diesel models can gain from the deal while electric ones cannot. Since the Range Rover Electric is built in the UK and imported fully built, it gets no relief.
Why is JLR going electric in India now?
JLR’s India business has shifted towards expensive flagships. According to Autocar Professional, the Defender, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport now make up more than 80 percent of its sales, with an average transaction price of roughly ₹1.4 crore. Retail sales fell 2 percent in FY26, yet revenue grew about 14 percent.
That buyer base can afford a premium EV. Amba also argued that Indian luxury buyers want electric cars without giving up brand identity, which is exactly what a Range Rover Electric offers. Our coverage of how India’s luxury car buyers are moving to bigger, smarter cars shows the same trend.
Globally, JLR plans to spend £18 billion through FY29 on technologies, platforms and business transformation.
What about Jaguar?
Jaguar will return to India as an all-electric brand, led by the Type 01, in the second half of 2027. It is a big reset for a name that Indian buyers once knew for sedans like the XF and XJ.
We have covered the Type 01 in detail, including its 1,000-hp electric GT positioning, in our Jaguar Type 01 first look. India pricing has not been announced.
What will it cost to run?
Energy is the cheap part of owning this car. At an assumed home tariff of ₹8 per unit, filling the 118.5kWh battery from empty would cost roughly ₹950. Spread over JLR’s 535km real-world claim, that is under ₹2 per km. These are our estimates, ignoring charging losses, and public fast-charging costs much more.
Insurance, tyres and depreciation will matter far more at this price. Ask for an insurance quote early, because premiums are linked to the car’s value.
What about the Range Rover Sport Electric and Range Rover GT?
JLR India has named both models but has not shared India specifications, prices or dates for them. Autocar Professional describes the Range Rover GT as JLR’s move into the grand tourer segment, alongside its SUVs. Beyond that, little is official. Until JLR publishes details, treat any range, power or price figures you see for these two models as speculation, and do not book on the strength of them.
Who are the rivals?
At this level, buyers will cross-shop other ultra-luxury electric SUVs and high-performance EVs. The new electric Porsche Cayenne is a natural comparison, and our Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric breakdown covers its power and range.
The Range Rover’s advantage is its blend of luxury and off-road ability. JLR says the EV can climb 45-degree slopes in single-pedal driving and keeps the 900mm wading depth of the ICE car, with air suspension available.
What should buyers check before booking?
The ₹10 lakh booking is a serious commitment, so a few questions are worth asking:
- Is the booking amount fully refundable if the final price disappoints?
- Which charging setup does JLR supply, and what does installation cost at your home?
- What battery warranty applies in India, and how are battery repairs handled?
- How many dealers can service high-voltage systems, especially outside metro cities?
- What resale or buy-back support is available, given that luxury EV resale values are still untested in India?
CarBike Insight Analysis
The Range Rover Electric is a convincing product on paper. A 118.5kWh battery, fast 350kW charging and the usual Range Rover comfort and capability make it one of the more complete luxury EVs coming to India.
The weak point is price. With no duty relief for five years and full import, it will likely carry a big premium over the combustion Range Rover. That gap could push some buyers back to petrol or hybrid models.
Who should book? Existing Range Rover owners who want an electric flagship, have home charging and drive mostly in and around cities. Who should wait? Buyers who are price-sensitive even at this level, or who need long highway trips through areas with few 350kW chargers. Waiting for confirmed prices and a few months of owner feedback costs nothing.
