The Zontes ZT903-R is the next big motorcycle from the Chinese brand, and design-filing images published this week show what looks like the finished production bike. It is a sharp streetfighter built around an all-new three-cylinder engine, and it sits a clear step above the Zontes 703 range.
The images first surfaced in China, and European outlets including motorcycles.news, Motorrad and Australian Motorcycle News reported them on October 27. Zontes has not officially presented the bike. Even the name is a working title: “903” refers to the expected engine size, and that size has not been confirmed.
So treat this as an early look. Here is what the images show, what is only rumour, how it compares with the current 703R, and what it could mean for riders in India.
What is the Zontes ZT903-R?
It is a naked streetfighter powered by a newly developed triple. Prototypes are already being ridden on public roads in China, though mostly without their bodywork.
Zontes is following a wider trend among Chinese brands. Instead of small singles, they are moving into big multi-cylinder bikes aimed squarely at Japanese and European rivals. The 703 family was step one. The ZT903-R would be step two.
Who is Zontes, and why does this bike matter?
Zontes is the best-known motorcycle brand of China’s Tayo group. For years it was known mainly for 125cc and 310cc singles, then for feature-heavy 350s like the ones sold in India.
According to Zontes’ own account, criticism at home that it had no twin-cylinder bike pushed it to skip twins and go straight to a triple. The first design was talked about at around 800cc with a high 13.5:1 compression ratio, and an early sketch even used a Yamaha MT-09 engine as a placeholder.
What finally reached showrooms was the 699cc triple. It now powers four bikes: the 703R naked, the 703T sport tourer, the 703RR supersport and the 703F adventure tourer. Zontes is still rolling the 703 family out across Europe, which tells you how quickly the brand is moving.
That speed is the real story. A second, bigger triple arriving while the first is still new suggests Zontes is serious about the middleweight market, not just testing the water.
What does the ZT903-R look like?
It is aggressive. The LED headlights are stacked one above the other, and the mirrors are mounted on the bar ends. Side panels stretch forward from the tank and carry large winglets.
The tail is very short, with no bodywork under the seat. Instead, two silencers are tucked up high. A large rectangular TFT screen sits in the cockpit, which is normal for Zontes.
Several small details suggest this is the road-legal version, not a concept. The images show round reflectors on the fork legs, a number-plate holder and a large catalytic converter box under the engine. A show bike would not need any of those.
Zontes three-cylinder engine: not a bored-out 703
This is the most important point. According to motorcycles.news, the castings, mounting points and even the bolt pattern on the engine covers differ from the 699cc triple in the 703 range. The new engine is visibly larger.
No official displacement exists yet. Rumours in China point to around 900cc. Motorrad quotes Chinese insiders talking about 875cc and 135PS. Both are unconfirmed.
Zontes first talked about its triple plans in 2021. Back then the company boss also mentioned a 1,000cc version on social media. Whether that ever arrives is anyone’s guess.

Frame, suspension and electronics
The chassis is a cast aluminium frame, the same basic approach Zontes uses on its current bikes. The big upgrade is a single-sided swingarm, something the brand used on some earlier 310cc singles and showed on a 2020 sketch of a triple.
Up front there is an inverted fork and twin front discs on multi-spoke cast wheels. Motorrad reports that Brembo, rather than Nissin, could supply the brakes, with radial four-piston monoblock calipers. That is a rumour for now.
A load sensor sits in the gear linkage, the kind a quickshifter needs, and the footpegs look adjustable. Motorrad also expects the 703R’s electronics to carry over, including cornering ABS and traction control, five riding modes and keyless start. Those are reasonable expectations, not confirmed specs.
How does it compare with the Zontes 703R?
The 703R is the bike the ZT903-R will sit above. Its figures are official; the ZT903-R column is rumour or expectation.
| Spec | Zontes 703R (official) | Zontes ZT903-R (reported) |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | 699cc triple | New triple, about 875-900cc (rumour) |
| Power | 95hp at 11,500rpm | 135PS (rumour) |
| Torque | 74.4Nm at 8,500rpm | Not known |
| Compression ratio | 13:1 | Not known |
| Swingarm | Conventional | Single-sided |
| Weight | 198kg ready to ride (Motorrad) | Not known; Motorrad expects over 200kg |
| Price | €6,488 in Spain (ETC version) | Motorrad estimates €8,000 to under €10,000 |
The pricing estimate is the headline for riders. Motorrad points out that even at its estimate, the ZT903-R would undercut established triples such as the Yamaha MT-09, which starts at €11,519 in Germany.
When will it be revealed?
Zontes has not said. Motorrad suggests a showing at EICMA 2026 in Milan, which runs November 3-8, is possible. It also expects more versions to follow, such as a fully faired 903 RR, a 903 F adventure bike and a 903 T crossover, mirroring the 703 family. All of that is speculation until Zontes speaks.
Will the Zontes ZT903-R come to India?
There is no sign of that yet. Zontes India currently sells four bikes, all with a 348cc single: the 350X at ₹2.37 lakh, the 350R at ₹2.57 lakh, the 350T at ₹2.75-2.99 lakh and the GK350 at ₹3.22 lakh, ex-showroom, according to Autocar India. Even the 703 triple range has not been launched here.
If it ever came, it would land in a growing middleweight triple space. Triumph is already selling the Trident 800 at select dealers, as we reported in our story on Triumph Trident 800 prices in India. An import would also attract higher GST for bikes above 350cc, which would erase much of the price advantage it enjoys in Europe.
For most Indian riders, the more relevant Zontes bikes remain the 350s, which compete with performance singles such as the Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z with its new TFT display.
CarBike Insight Analysis
The ZT903-R is a statement bike. A fresh, larger triple with a single-sided swingarm and a quickshifter-ready gearbox shows that Zontes wants to play in the same league as Yamaha and Triumph, not just undercut them on small bikes.
The open questions are the usual ones for a young brand: dealer reach, parts supply, resale value and long-term reliability of an all-new engine. Those matter more than a headline power figure.
Who should care now? European and Australian riders shopping for a value triple next year should watch EICMA. Indian riders should see this mainly as a signal of where Chinese motorcycle brands are heading, alongside other EICMA newcomers such as the Norton 450 Roadster.
Who should not wait? Anyone in India who wants a triple this year. The ZT903-R has no India plan at all.
