Kawasaki KLE650 India Launch: Expected Price, Versys 650 Clash and Timing

A Kawasaki KLE650 India launch is now the big question for Indian adventure riders, after Kawasaki officially revealed the bike on October 27, 2026. The KLE650 uses a retuned 649cc parallel twin, a 21-inch front wheel and long-travel suspension, and it arrives in the UK and US early next year.

What Kawasaki has not done is say anything about India. There is no launch date, no price and no confirmation that it will come here at all. NDTV says it is likely to be launched in India, but that is an expectation, not an announcement.

We first wrote about this bike when it appeared in Australian approval paperwork, in our story on the Kawasaki KLE 650 approval listing. Now that the full specs are out, here is what it would cost here, how it stacks up against the Versys 650 already on sale, and whether you should wait.

What did Kawasaki reveal?

The KLE650 comes in two versions: the standard KLE650 and the better-equipped KLE650 SE. Kawasaki says it is aimed at long-distance touring comfort rather than hardcore off-roading, even with the 21-inch front wheel.

Confirmed overseas prices and timing:

  • UK: £7,499 (KLE650) and £8,899 (SE), from April 2027
  • US: $8,799 (KLE650 ABS) and $9,999 (SE ABS), arriving in February
  • UK show debut: Motorcycle Live, NEC Birmingham, November 21-29

Kawasaki dealers will also offer three accessory-based Edition models: Top Case, Rally and Adventure Tourer.

Engine and performance

The engine is Kawasaki’s familiar 649cc liquid-cooled parallel twin, the same family used in the Versys 650, Ninja 650 and Z650. It keeps the 83 x 60mm bore and stroke but runs a lower 10.6:1 compression ratio, against 10.8:1 on the Versys.

Kawasaki reworked the electronic throttle valves, intake and exhaust to boost torque below 4,000rpm. US-spec claims are 70hp at 8,600rpm and 64Nm (47.2lb-ft) at 7,500rpm. That is more than the Versys 650 makes.

A six-speed gearbox with an assist and slipper clutch is standard. The SE adds a bi-directional quickshifter, which is an accessory on the base bike.

How serious is the KLE650 off-road?

Less than the 21-inch wheel suggests. Kawasaki itself says the bike prioritises long-distance touring comfort, and MCN does not see it as a rival to hard-edged rally bikes like the Yamaha Ténéré 700 or Aprilia Tuareg 660.

There are clear signs of that road bias. The fork is non-adjustable, the rear shock only adjusts for preload, and the brakes use two-piston calipers. The engine also keeps a 180-degree crank, while the Yamaha and Aprilia twins use a 270-degree crank with a more V-twin-like feel.

Kawasaki has still done the basics properly for rough roads. ABS can be switched off, the fuel tank and airbox are slim so you can stand and move around, the footpegs have removable rubber inserts, and the silencer is tucked up for ground clearance without blocking luggage.

For Indian riders, that balance may be exactly right. Most “adventure” riding here means bad tarmac, broken ghat roads, water crossings and gravel, not motocross tracks. A comfortable bike that copes with all of that is more useful than a tall, stiff rally replica.

KLE650 vs Versys 650: which makes more sense in India?

The Versys 650 is Kawasaki India’s current middleweight tourer, priced at ₹8.63 lakh ex-showroom. The two bikes share an engine family but are built for different riders.

The KLE650 is the better choice if you ride broken roads, gravel and the occasional trail. The longer suspension and 21-inch wheel make a huge difference on Indian surfaces.

The Versys is the better highway tourer. Its 21-litre tank gives a longer range between fuel stops, the seat is lower, and road tyres on 17-inch wheels grip better on tarmac. Shorter riders should also note the KLE650’s tall seat.

What would the KLE650 cost in India?

There is no official price, so everything here is our estimate.

The NDTV conversion of the US price works out to about ₹8.37 lakh for the base bike and ₹9.51 lakh for the SE. Straight conversions are never the final Indian price. Import route, local assembly, GST and Kawasaki’s positioning all matter.

Two points shape our thinking. Bikes above 350cc now attract a 40% GST rate, as Autocar India reported in August 2026, which pushes big-bike prices up. And Kawasaki will not want the KLE650 to clash head-on with the ₹8.63 lakh Versys 650.

Our estimate: around ₹9-10 lakh ex-showroom for the base KLE650 if it is assembled locally, and more for the SE. A fully imported bike would cost more. Please treat this as a guide only.

Kawasaki KLE650 India launch: when could it happen?

Again, nothing is confirmed. Kawasaki usually launches big bikes here a few months after their global debut, and the KLE650 only reaches UK showrooms in April 2027.

The smaller KLE500 is a clue. It was revealed abroad first, and Autocar India still expects an India launch in the coming months, at an estimated ₹6.50 lakh if imported. If the KLE500 arrives first, a KLE650 could follow later in 2027. That is our reading, not Kawasaki’s.

Kawasaki India has been busy this year, with the Z300 for example, which we covered in our Kawasaki Z300 India booking guide. It has also refreshed bigger tourers abroad, such as the 2027 Kawasaki Versys 900, without confirming India plans.

What could change before an India launch?

  • The variant mix. India may get only one version at first, most likely the SE for its tubeless tyres.
  • Tyres. The Dunlop Trailmax Mixtour may be swapped for a locally available option.
  • Colours. The UK and US already have different colour lists.
  • Seat options. A lower accessory seat would widen the bike’s appeal here.

CarBike Insight Analysis

The KLE650 fills a real gap. Kawasaki India has no proper 21-inch-wheel middleweight adventure bike, and Indian roads reward long suspension travel more than almost anywhere else.

The engine is proven and should be easy to live with, and cruise control plus traction control are useful on long highway days. The smaller tank and tall seat are the main compromises.

Price is the make-or-break factor. If Kawasaki can bring it in close to the Versys 650, it becomes one of the most sensible twin-cylinder adventure bikes in the country. If it lands well above ₹10 lakh, many buyers will look harder at cheaper alternatives or wait for the KLE500.

Who should wait? Riders who want a twin-cylinder adventure bike for mixed roads and are willing to hold off until 2027. Who should buy now? Highway-focused tourers who want a proven Kawasaki today; the Versys 650 is still a fine choice.

We will update this page as soon as Kawasaki India says anything.
