XUV 3XO ZNG Bharat NCAP: 5 Stars, 29.36 Adult Score and What Changed

XUV 3XO ZNG Bharat NCAP results arrived on November 6, 2026, and Mahindra’s factory-fitted CNG SUV has scored the full five stars. It posted 29.36 out of 32 in adult occupant protection and 45 out of 49 in child occupant protection, which Mahindra says makes it India’s first sub-compact CNG SUV with a five-star Bharat NCAP rating.

The result landed the same week Mahindra began customer deliveries of the ZNG, which went on sale in October at ₹9.99-12.27 lakh (ex-showroom). For buyers who worried that a pair of gas cylinders under the boot floor might cost safety, this is the answer they were waiting for. There is also a quieter detail that matters to existing XUV 3XO owners.

What did the XUV 3XO ZNG score in Bharat NCAP?

According to Mahindra’s official announcement, the ZNG scored 29.36/32 for adult occupants and 45/49 for children. ETAuto and Autocar India reported the same figures. Autocar India’s breakdown shows “good” protection for the driver’s head, neck, pelvis and thighs in the frontal offset test, with “adequate” chest protection and one tibia rated “marginal”. The co-driver got “good” protection across all regions, as did occupants in the side barrier and side pole tests.

What changed from the 2024 XUV 3XO crash test?

The adult score is unchanged. The child score went up by two points, and that improvement now also applies to other XUV 3XO versions built after a specific production point.

Autocar India reports that the higher vehicle-assessment score covers all XUV 3XO models manufactured from VIN MA1NS2NVPS2B98575 onwards. If you bought a 3XO recently, your car may already carry the better child-protection rating. Your dealer can confirm where your VIN falls.

Does CNG make the XUV 3XO less safe?

On this evidence, no. The adult result matches the petrol and diesel car exactly, which suggests the twin-cylinder layout under the boot floor did not hurt crash performance in the tests Bharat NCAP runs. Mahindra also lists CNG-specific protection: integrated gas-leak detection that automatically switches the engine to petrol mode if it senses a leak.

Bharat NCAP does not run a rear impact test, so it does not directly assess how the cylinders behave in a hit from behind. That is a limit of the programme, not a known weakness of this car. Regular CNG kit inspections and hydro-testing of cylinders still apply to every CNG owner.

What safety kit does the XUV 3XO ZNG get as standard?

Mahindra says the ZNG has more than 35 standard safety features, including six airbags, electronic stability control and ISOFIX child-seat mounts. Autocar India adds a tyre pressure monitoring system and a reversing camera. The Level 2 ADAS suite stays limited to top turbo-petrol and diesel variants, so it is not offered on the CNG car.

That gap matters more as the government’s draft AEB mandate moves forward. For now, the ZNG’s passive safety story is strong, while active-safety tech is where the turbo-petrol variants still lead.

How much extra do you pay for CNG?

We compared the CNG prices with the equivalent petrol trims using CarDekho’s launch-day list. These are ex-showroom prices from October 2026.

The ZNG uses the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine rated at 82 kW (111 PS) and 200 Nm in both CNG and petrol modes, with a six-speed manual and a certified 24.7 km/kg. Boot space drops to 270 litres but stays flat. Our launch-week explainer covers the powertrain and packaging in more detail.

Who are its main CNG rivals?

The most direct rival is the Tata Nexon CNG, which Autocar India notes does not yet have a published Bharat NCAP report of its own. CarDekho also lists factory-CNG versions of the Maruti Brezza, Maruti Fronx and Tata Punch as alternatives. Among them, the XUV 3XO ZNG now has the clearest published crash rating specific to its CNG version, which gives Mahindra a simple sales line in showrooms.

CarBike Insight Analysis

This result strengthens a product that was already pitched as a “zero compromise” CNG SUV. Matching the petrol car’s adult score while improving the child score means Mahindra has taken one of the biggest buyer doubts about CNG off the table. The timing, alongside the start of deliveries, is clearly deliberate, and Mahindra’s recent SUV volume momentum gives it room to push the ZNG hard.

The trade-offs have not changed. You still give up an automatic gearbox, ADAS and some boot space for lower running costs, and you pay between ₹80,000 and ₹1.19 lakh more than the comparable petrol trims. Kilometre count decides the maths: high-mileage city users will recover the premium faster than weekend drivers.

Our view: if you want a compact SUV that runs on CNG and safety is your first filter, the XUV 3XO ZNG is now the easiest recommendation in the class. Existing 3XO owners should check their VIN, since cars built after the cutoff share the improved child-protection score.
