Tesla Roadster Reservations Open in India: Why the ₹2.50 Crore Thrust Figure Is Not Its Price

Tesla Roadster India reservations: Tesla’s next-generation Roadster has returned to the headlines with a dramatic demonstration, a production target and a reservation page that has reached Indian buyers. The figure drawing the most attention is ₹2.50 crore for the Thrust configuration. But that number needs a careful label: it is being reported as the total reservation payment, not as Tesla’s confirmed Indian showroom price.

That difference is more than a technicality. The Roadster is still under development, Tesla has not announced its final retail price or an India delivery schedule, and the company’s reservation terms say delivery timing is not guaranteed. For a car whose most unusual features are also the least proven for public-road use, the booking amount is only one part of a much larger set of questions.

Tesla Roadster India reservations: what the ₹2.50 crore figure means

Indian reports describe a two-stage reservation. Buyers first pay ₹5.01 lakh, then within 10 days—₹45.05 lakh for Performance or ₹2,45,24,000 for Thrust. That brings the reported totals to ₹50.06 lakh and ₹2,50,25,000 respectively. The initial amount is reported as refundable; buyers should check Tesla’s live India terms for the later payment and cancellation conditions.

These are reservation payments, not final ex-showroom prices. Tesla has not announced the Roadster’s India price, and no confirmed figure should be inferred by treating the booking amount as the purchase cost. Taxes, import duties, homologation, shipping, options and local specifications could all affect a final price if the car is eventually offered here.

Tesla’s product page currently presents Performance as the road-ready two-seat configuration, Thrust as a limited-release two-seater with rear cold-gas thrusters, and Rocket as an invite-only, single-seat configuration. The company says the Rocket version is not approved for public-road use and may not be available in every region.

What Tesla has shown and what remains a claim

Tesla’s October reveal put the Roadster back in the spotlight after years of waiting. The company demonstrated a redesigned two-seat electric sports car with an underbody suction system and cold-gas thrusters. At the event, the car performed a brief airborne manoeuvre. Tesla also claims the Thrust configuration can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under one second. These are manufacturer claims and a demonstration, not independent instrumented test results. The suction system is designed to draw air from beneath the car and create downforce. In principle, downforce presses tyres into the road and can improve grip, particularly at speed or through corners. Tesla describes a multi-mode fan and ground-sealing system, with active aerodynamics and steer-by-wire technology. Autocar India reports Tesla’s claim of up to 2G of grip from the system, but the company has not released the detailed test conditions or an independent validation.

Thrust adds cold-gas thrusters at the rear. Tesla says they can provide acceleration and allow short airborne movements. The Rocket configuration adds thrusters around the car to enable upward, forward and lateral movement, but it is a separate invite-only concept and Tesla says it is not approved for public roads. “Flying car” makes a memorable headline; the practical description is a car demonstrated briefly lifting off under controlled conditions, with its public-road legality unresolved.

The India question: production is targeted for 2028, but deliveries are not confirmed

Tesla’s production target is 2028, initially with left-hand-drive cars. That is not an Indian launch date. India’s left-side traffic means retail buyers need to know whether and when a right-hand-drive version could be developed and certified; no schedule has been announced.

The suction system and thrusters bring engineering and regulatory questions beyond those of an ordinary sports car. Tesla says Rocket is not road-approved; public information has not established the India road legality of Performance or Thrust hardware. A live reservation page does not confirm that every configuration will be certified or delivered here.

Most importantly, Tesla’s reservation agreement warns that the Roadster is still under development and that the company cannot guarantee when a vehicle will be delivered—or that it will be delivered. The Associated Press reported this caveat in the US reservation terms. Buyers should read the actual India agreement before transferring any substantial payment, as local terms may differ.

Core Elements of Detailed Mechanical Specifications

The Roadster’s final production specifications remain incomplete. The figures below separate what Tesla currently claims from details it has not yet confirmed.

Mechanical elementInformation available as of 19 October 2026
Vehicle typeBattery-electric, two-seat sports car in Performance and Thrust configurations
Rocket configurationInvite-only, single seat; not approved for public-road use, according to Tesla
PowertrainAll-electric; final motor layout and output not published
Performance claimThrust: 0–60 mph in under one second, claimed by Tesla
Downforce systemMulti-mode underbody suction fan and ground-sealing system, described by Tesla
Thrust hardwareRear cold-gas thrusters on Thrust; Rocket adds perimeter thrusters, according to Tesla
Battery capacityNot announced
RangeNo final production figure announced for the redesigned car
Charging rateNot announced
Kerb weight and dimensionsNot announced
India configurationReservation page is live; final India price, right-hand-drive timing and delivery date unconfirmed
Production timingTesla has stated a 2028 production target; timing is not a delivery guarantee

This is why headline performance numbers should be handled with care. A sub-second acceleration claim is highly dependent on the final hardware, tyres, surface, launch procedure and measurement method. Likewise, downforce figures mean little without test speeds, conditions and a production-ready system. Until those details are available, the Roadster is best discussed as a technology-led pre-production vehicle, not as a fully specified production car.

Who is the Roadster reservation really for?

At these amounts, the reservation suits only buyers comfortable with a substantial upfront commitment and a long, uncertain wait. The Thrust payment is not the final price and guarantees no delivery date. Performance buyers should also separate the reservation from the eventual vehicle cost.

The appeal is clear: dramatic styling, extreme acceleration claims and aerospace-inspired technology. But Indian buyers also need answers on homologation, road legality, service, parts, insurance, charging and right-hand-drive production. Reservations have not settled these practical questions.

For now, an Indian reservation is an expression of interest, not confirmation of a near-term purchase. Buyers should read the current contract, confirm refund terms and payment deadlines, and understand what happens if timing or specifications change.

CarBike Insight Analysis

The Roadster’s return ties an electric sports car to an ambitious engineering demonstration. Its suction system and thrusters attract attention, but also underline the gap between a controlled reveal and a usable road car.

For Indian readers, the central fact is that ₹2.50 crore is a reported reservation payment, not a confirmed price. Tesla has no announced Indian selling price, right-hand-drive plan or delivery date. Production is targeted for 2028, but delivery is not guaranteed.

The Roadster may become a striking electric performance car, but current information does not make it a confirmed Indian-market product. The ₹2.50 crore figure tells us the reported reservation commitment, not what the finished car will cost.
