A Toyota Corolla Cross EV test car has been caught on camera, but it is not quite what it seems. Spy photos published on October 29, 2026, by Carscoops and SlashGear show a heavily modified Corolla Cross with a shorter wheelbase, prototype headlights and no exhaust pipes.
Both outlets believe it is a “mule”, an early test car that hides new hardware under an existing body. Carscoops thinks it is testing the new “multi-pathway” platform Toyota confirmed this week, which is designed to take electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains on one set of hardware.
Toyota has not commented on the car. So everything about its name, battery and launch is unconfirmed. Here is what the photos show, what Toyota has actually said, and why it matters for India.
What did the spy shots show?
The photos show a camouflaged Corolla Cross body with three clear differences: a much shorter wheelbase than the real car’s 2,640mm, headlights that do not match production parts, and no tailpipes. Carscoops also spotted a frame under the floor. SlashGear says the battery appears to sit low, with the suspension raised to fit it.
SlashGear describes the proportions as somewhere between the Corolla Cross and the smaller Yaris Cross sold in Europe and Japan. The tail-lights and rear design are clearly Corolla Cross.
InsideEVs Germany reports that the car was photographed near Toyota’s European development centre.
It helps to read spy photos carefully. A missing exhaust is a strong clue to an electric drivetrain, but a shorter wheelbase and odd lights only tell us the body has been cut and rebuilt. They say nothing about the final design, which will look very different from this test car.
Is this an electric Corolla Cross?
Probably not in the way the name suggests. Carscoops says it is not an EV version of the current Corolla Cross, which went on sale in North America in late 2021 and was facelifted for the 2026 model year. Instead, the body is borrowed to hide a new, smaller platform at an early stage of testing.
That is why the car looks so rough. Carmakers build mules by cutting up existing models because real prototypes are not ready for public roads yet.
People will still search for it as the Corolla Cross EV or the Toyota Corolla EV, because those names describe what it might become. SlashGear’s view is that the electric version could slot below the C-HR in Toyota’s US range, while a hybrid version could replace the Corolla Cross as Toyota’s entry SUV.
What is Toyota’s multi-pathway platform?
Toyota confirmed this week that its next vehicle architecture will support battery-electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains on one platform. Today, most Toyota cars use TNGA, while EVs such as the bZ use a separate e-TNGA base. One shared platform should simplify development and let factories shift output between powertrains.
| Today | New platform (announced) | |
|---|---|---|
| Petrol and hybrid cars | TNGA | Shared multi-pathway platform |
| Electric cars | e-TNGA (bZ models) | Same shared platform |
| Plug-in hybrids | TNGA | Same shared platform |
| New engine | 1.5-litre three-cylinder and 1.8-litre four-cylinder | New 1.5-litre three-cylinder replaces both |
| Fuel use, hybrids and PHEVs | – | 15% less, Toyota target |
| On the road | – | From next year |
Carscoops says this approach could open the door to the first-ever Corolla EV. Toyota says no powertrain will be compromised for the sake of another. We covered the new engine in our explainer on the Toyota next-generation hybrid.
Toyota Corolla Cross EV: confirmed vs not confirmed
| Item | Status |
|---|---|
| A modified Corolla Cross test car exists | Photographed (Oct 29, 2026) |
| Shorter wheelbase, prototype lights, no exhaust | Visible in photos |
| Toyota multi-pathway platform for EV, hybrid and PHEV | Confirmed by Toyota |
| This mule tests that platform | Likely (Carscoops and SlashGear view) |
| Car is fully electric | Likely (no exhaust); not confirmed |
| Name “Corolla Cross EV” or “Corolla EV” | Not confirmed |
| Next Corolla built in China from 2028 | Reported (InsideEVs Germany) |
| Battery, range, price, launch date | Not announced |
When could it go on sale?
There is no date. Toyota says the new platform and engines reach the road next year, meaning 2027. SlashGear notes earlier rumours that the Corolla Cross is due for replacement in 2028, and InsideEVs Germany reports production of the next Corolla in China from 2028. A rough mule today suggests a launch is still a long way off.
InsideEVs Germany also warns against early range claims of 400km or more. There are no official battery or range figures yet, so we have none to report.
A useful rule of thumb: mules usually come first, then camouflaged prototypes wearing the real body, then a reveal. This car is at the first stage. When you start seeing disguised cars with a new shape, a debut is getting closer.
Why does this matter for international buyers?
The Corolla Cross is a big-volume car, so whatever this mule becomes will matter to a lot of buyers. SlashGear says Toyota sold almost 100,000 in the US alone in 2025, which makes it one of the brand’s most important entry points. Whatever replaces it will be Toyota’s affordable SUV for millions of buyers in North America, Europe and Asia.
For US readers, a small EV below the C-HR would fill an obvious gap at a lower price than the bZ. In Europe, it would face a crowded field of small electric SUVs. Toyota’s supply challenges are real too: our report on the Toyota RAV4 shortage shows how demand can outrun production.
What does it mean for India?
The Corolla Cross is not sold in India, so this exact car is not an India story yet. Toyota India’s only electric SUV is the Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella, which is based on a Suzuki EV rather than a Toyota platform.
The platform matters more than the car. India is a hybrid-heavy market for Toyota, and a single architecture for hybrids, plug-ins and EVs could make it easier to bring electric versions of future Toyota models here without a separate engineering programme. That is our reading, not a Toyota statement.
For an India launch, three things would need to line up: a price that works against local electric SUVs, a battery supply plan, and a decision by Toyota to build or assemble the car locally. None of that has been discussed yet.
CarBike Insight Analysis
This is an early signal, not a product. The mule tells us Toyota has started road-testing its new shared platform, and that a smaller electric SUV is part of the plan.
The bigger story is strategy. Toyota has been slower than rivals on EVs and stronger on hybrids. A platform that builds both on the same line is a hedge: if EV demand rises in one market and falls in another, factories can switch.
Who should wait? Nobody should hold a purchase for this car. It is at least a year from any reveal. Who should pay attention? Toyota fans in the US and Europe who want a small, affordable electric SUV from a brand they trust, and Indian buyers watching for Toyota’s own EV technology.
FAQ
Is Toyota making a Corolla Cross EV?
Toyota has not confirmed a Corolla Cross EV. Spy shots on October 29, 2026, showed a modified Corolla Cross with no exhaust, which reports believe is testing a new platform for electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid models.
What is the Toyota multi-pathway platform?
It is Toyota’s next vehicle architecture, designed to carry battery-electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains on one set of hardware. Toyota says it reaches the road next year, alongside a new 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine.
When will the electric Corolla Cross launch?
No date has been given. Toyota says the new platform arrives from next year, while reports point to a Corolla Cross replacement around 2028. Battery, range and price are not announced.
Will the Corolla Cross EV come to India?
There is no India plan. The Corolla Cross is not sold in India, and Toyota India’s current electric SUV, the Urban Cruiser Ebella, is based on a Suzuki model. The new shared platform is the part to watch.
Why is it called a mule?
A mule is an early test car built by modifying an existing model. It lets engineers test new hardware on real roads before proper prototypes with the final body are ready.
