BYD October 2026 Sales: 490,168 Units as Pure EVs Top 300,000 for First Time

BYD October 2026 sales reached 490,168 new energy vehicles, the company’s best month of the year and its highest total since December 2024. The figure, released on Sunday, November 1, is up 10.97% year-on-year and 5.74% from September.

The headline hides two very different stories. Battery-electric cars and exports are booming, while plug-in hybrids and sales at home in China are falling.

Here is the full breakdown, what drove it and what it means for buyers and rivals, including in India.

How big were BYD October 2026 sales?

BYD October 2026 sales totalled 490,168 vehicles, up 10.97% from 441,706 a year earlier. It was BYD’s sixth straight month of year-on-year growth and the fourth-highest monthly total in its history, behind only the last three months of 2024. Year-on-year growth did slow, though, from 16.98% in September.

For January to October, BYD sold 3,621,744 vehicles, still 2.16% below the same period of 2025. The gap is closing, but BYD needs a strong November and December to finish the year ahead.

The monthly trend explains the optimism. BYD sold just 190,190 vehicles in February and 210,051 in January, then climbed every month: 300,222 in March, 403,472 in June, 440,293 in August and 463,561 in September. October continued that run for an eighth straight monthly increase. If BYD repeats its usual year-end push, November and December could be the two biggest months of 2026.

China domestic sales319,974-10.57%

Pure EVs made up 63.28% of BYD’s passenger sales in October, up from 59.81% in September and 50.95% a year earlier.

Why did BYD’s pure EV sales jump?

BYD sold 305,743 battery-electric passenger cars in October, the first time it has passed 300,000 in a month and its third record in a row. Sales rose 37.38% year-on-year and 11.94% from September. New and updated models, plus strong overseas demand for EVs, drove the jump.

BYD has been refreshing its range quickly. It launched the second-generation Seagull on October 20, with a bigger body and flash charging on some versions.

For the first ten months, BYD’s pure EV sales reached 1,935,700, up 5.86% year-on-year.

Why are BYD plug-in hybrid sales falling?

Plug-in hybrid sales fell 17.23% year-on-year to 177,382, the second monthly decline in a row. Hybrids are more exposed to BYD’s home market, where competition is fierce and sales are down. For January to October, BYD’s plug-in hybrid sales fell 11.02% to 1,625,969 units.

BYD is responding with new hybrids. The third-generation Qin Plus DM-i, launched on October 27, has a larger body, longer electric range and optional LiDAR. The second-generation Seal 07 follows on November 5 with both pure electric and plug-in hybrid versions.

How much did BYD export in October?

BYD sold 170,194 vehicles overseas in October, more than double the 83,904 of October 2025, although 5.81% fewer than in September. From January to October, overseas sales reached 1,513,154, up 93.75%. Exports now make up roughly a third of BYD’s monthly volume.

At home, the picture is weaker. BYD sold 319,974 cars in China in October, down 10.57% year-on-year but up 13.12% from September. Domestic sales for the year so far are 27.81% lower than in 2025.

Commercial vehicles are a small but growing part of the mix. BYD sold 7,043 electric buses, trucks and vans in October, up 45.22% year-on-year, and 60,075 from January to October, up 30.22%.

How does BYD compare with other Chinese EV makers?

BYD is still far ahead of every other Chinese EV maker. Its 483,125 passenger NEVs in October compare with 214,996 for Geely, 106,127 for Leapmotor and 50,237 for XPeng, according to a CarNewsChina tally. Geely Auto Group’s total sales, including petrol cars, reached a record 310,183, still well behind BYD.

The gap matters for prices. BYD’s scale lets it cut costs on batteries and parts, which is why rivals compete on technology and design rather than price. Leapmotor and XPeng are growing faster in percentage terms, but from a much smaller base, and both are also leaning on exports.

What does this mean for India?

BYD’s export surge matters for India because overseas markets are now its growth engine. BYD sells electric cars here, and its luxury brand Denza is preparing its Z9 GT for India. India’s own EV market is also growing fast, with electric car sales nearly doubling in October.

BYD does not break out India numbers in its monthly filing, so the Indian contribution to the 170,194 export figure is unknown. Registration data from the government’s Vahan portal will give a clearer picture of BYD’s Indian retail sales in the first days of each month.

CarBike Insight Analysis

BYD’s October shows a company in transition. It is becoming an EV-first, export-led carmaker, while its plug-in hybrids and its home market cool. That is a big change from 2024, when hybrids and China sales powered its growth.

The risk is concentration. More of BYD’s growth now depends on trade rules in Europe, Latin America and Asia. A single tariff decision can change a market overnight.

There is also a cost to the hybrid slowdown. Plug-in hybrids were BYD’s answer for buyers who worry about charging, and they sold strongly in markets with thin charging networks. If hybrid demand keeps falling at home, BYD may push more of them abroad, which could mean sharper hybrid prices in export markets. BYD’s Indian range has been built around pure EVs, so Indian buyers are more likely to feel the pure EV push than any hybrid price war.

Rivals feel the pressure. Ford has openly benchmarked BYD’s efficiency, as we covered in Ford UEV vs BYD, and Western brands still struggle to match BYD’s cost per kWh.

What to watch: whether BYD can turn October’s momentum into a full-year gain, and whether exports recover after their second monthly dip. The Seal 07 launch on November 5 is the next test.
